The Most Wonderful Time of the Year?

We had our first snow yesterday. Of course it couldn't be the cool type of snow that sticks around and looks pretty. It was the wet, messy, unnecessary, 'I'm gonna make the streets look ugly and dangerous while soaking your hair' type of snow.

Also, what's with the Christmas music? I know this issue is very black and white-- people either LOVE hearing Christmas music on the radio THE DAY AFTER HALLOWEEN (grrrr), or they Hate it. I am one of the haters. I will take your Christmas music... but please wait until AT LEAST after Thanksgiving. I would be even happier if you waited until after my birthday (December 7th, for those of you who want to send gifts...wink wink) but since that is not a very popular day (Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day anyone?) I wouldn't even mind if the radio stations waited until the week of Christmas. Go ahead, heckle me all you want. Come up on stage and take my VMA, telling me that Christmas music is one of the best inventions of ALL TIME. But I will still hold my opinion, at least for another few weeks.

Another thing, I think it must be the most horrible thing to be one of the Salvation Army bell ringers in a college town. Lawrence is mostly college kids who 1) don't have much money to spare and 2) aren't going to give some guy standing in their way to the grocery store the time of day. Freshman year, I rang bells one night for a community service project with my friend Jill and it was pretty brutal. Not only was it about 20 degrees, but people really just don't care about you! Maybe people are more in a giving mood on the week of Christmas. (I rest my case).

Sorry to put this double shot of pessimism in your Starbucks peppermint mocha latte (in a red holiday cup of course), I promise I will think differently come December.

  1. Haha!!! I loved this post Sarie! I am in the library and I LOLed. I will not diss you at all for hating Christmas music the day after freaking Halloween! HELLO! Who can handle celebrating Christmas for 2 months. I'm sorry but I want to actually be excited to hear my favorite Christmas songs on the actual holiday. .I don't want to be sick of them.

As for the salvation army bell ringers. . .yeah, I try not to make eye contact. I only donate if they are handing out tootsie rolls! Haha I am selfish!
