The Vitamin War

Vitamins and I have an interesting relationship. I guess you could say we don't get along very well.

I have been attempting to take a multi-vitamin with breakfast in the morning for a few weeks. The first week was the worst because I couldn't figure out what was going on. I would get to work and have a wave of intense nausea that would last for about 10 minutes, to the point where I was on the verge of making a run for a trashcan or toilet so that I wouldn't vomit all over my computer. I thought maybe I had a stomach virus, but it would only come in very short waves where I would feel all of the color drain out of my face, get really hot and start to feel like yacking. ("Yack" is my favorite synonym for vomit if you were wondering.) After a bit, it would be over and my day would go on as normal.

I spent that first week varying my breakfast menu to see who the culprit was that was making me feel sick. I blamed the tomato juice (simply because I think it is disgusting) but soon found that that was not the case, much to my dismay. It wasn't until Friday of that week when I had to stop my car on the way to work in case I needed to lean out and vom that I put 2 + 2 together and found out it was the vitamins. DUN DUN DUN.

So I took a week off from taking them. Sure enough, the sick feeling was gone. I bought some NEW vitamins on Monday thinking that this would take care of my problem, but unfortunately my plan was foiled as the "morning-sickness" returned. (P.S. I know what you're thinking, and there is no chance that I am pregnant so get that thought out of your head, silly.)

Am I just not eating enough when I take the vitamins? A typical breakfast for me includes a grapefruit half, bowl of cereal and a yogurt, or an orange, scrambled eggs and a nature valley bar (or some variant therein)-- and I am NOT a breakfast person, so this is a lot for me to eat!! Do you have any suggestions?

I really would like to take a vitamin to ensure that I get all the vitamins and minerals I need on a daily basis, so I want to make it work. Do I need to buy a new kind of vitamin? Is there a specific ingredient that is making me feel sick? I would wait to take it with lunch, but I don't usually get to eat lunch... I typically just eat a couple of snacks throughout the day.

Help me out if you can! If you give me advice, I promise to stop talking about vomit... :)

  1. I take a fish oil, vitamin D, & vit C everyday separately w/ no multi-vitamin...then again I am not the model of healthiness...
